CODESYS

CODESYS is the leading vendor-neutral automation software. Users around the world use CODESYS to create control programs for automation systems, regardless of the network protocol used.

Software, Control

Quick read

Proprietary PLC programming environments tie machine builders to specific control manufacturers, their licensing models, and network protocols. That is why TURCK relies on CODESYS, the vendor-neutral automation software compliant with IEC 61131-3: Control programs written in languages such as ST or FUP run on multi-protocol devices regardless of the protocol and can be combined with PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, CANopen, or OPC UA. The IP67 PLCs TBEN-L-PLC, the gateways BL20/BL67-PG-EN-V3, and the TX series HMI/PLC devices in a single engineering workflow, supplemented by TURCK libraries for IO-Link and the BL ident RFID system, as well as the license-free TX VisuPro visualization software. Control logic is thus moved directly to the machine, and data is filtered before being transmitted to the cloud. The result: no additional software licensing costs, less cabling, modular machines, and programs that can be used globally.

Open system

Unlike the programming environments offered by major control system manufacturers, the software is independent of the more than 400 hardware manufacturers that use the automation platform. Openness and interoperability among devices and systems from different manufacturers are therefore fundamental characteristics of the program. More and more users worldwide appreciate this approach and strengthen the overall system with their solutions.

IEC 61131-3 ensures interoperability

The software complies with the international standard for PLC programming, IEC 61131-3, which in turn ensures the interoperability of CODESYS programs with other standardized devices. Programming in CODESYS is based on programming languages such as AWL, ST, FUP, and others, which ensures seamless communication with other devices and systems.

Boundless

CODESYS allows the use of different fieldbus and Ethernet protocols within a single automation system. When users create applications that combine PROFINET and EtherNet/IP™ or EtherCAT, they benefit from the software’s openness.

Benefits

TX Visu Pro Visualization Software

If CODESYS's visualization capabilities are insufficient, or if the TX series HMI devices need to communicate with controllers from other manufacturers at the HMI protocol level, TURCK offers its own powerful visualization program: TX VisuPro is Turck’s development environment for creating graphical user interfaces.

The software provides a CODESYS driver for connecting to CODESYS controllers. In addition, TX Visu Pro can communicate simultaneously with up to eight identical or different controllers. Among others, it supports the HMI protocols of the following controller manufacturers:

  • Siemens
  • PHOENIX CONTACT
  • Allen-Bradley
  • Beckhoff

CODESYS (V2, V3):

  • Mitsubishi
  • Omron
  • Modbus (TCP, RTU)
  • CANopen
  • OPC UA (server, client)
  • MQTT

Advanced features such as gesture control, scheduling, JavaScript, IP cameras, email, and audit trails can be implemented quickly and intuitively.

TX VisuPro is license-free when used with Turck hardware and is available for free download on the Turck website. Thanks to the integrated simulation mode, you can create and test a visualization even without actual hardware.

CODESYS at TURCK: frequently asked questions

Why does TURCK use CODESYS for programmable automation devices?

TURCK uses CODESYS because it is a vendor-independent programming environment based on the international standard IEC 61131-3. Engineers program TURCK devices using standard languages such as Structured Text (ST) and Function Block Diagram (FBD) and are not tied to the licensing model of a single PLC vendor. TURCK provides the CODESYS programming software free of charge for use with TURCK hardware. According to the CODESYS Group, more than 500 device manufacturers offer CODESYS-compatible devices, making it possible to transfer programming expertise from one hardware platform to the next.

Which TURCK products can be programmed using CODESYS?

TURCK offers three product families of programmable CODESYS V3 devices: the BL20 and BL67 programmable gateways (BLxx-PG-EN-V3), the compact IP67 PLCs of the TBEN-L series (TBEN-L…-PLC), and the TX series HMI/PLC terminals with integrated visualization options. All are programmed in the same CODESYS development environment, so a single engineering workflow covers control at the I/O level, machine-level PLCs, and operator terminals.

What are the benefits of running the CODESYS controller directly in the field?

CODESYS on TURCK IP67 devices shifts the control logic from the control cabinet to the machine. The TBEN-L PLCs feature fully enclosed housings with protection classes IP65/IP67/IP69K and operate either as standalone PLCs or as decentralized PLCs that preprocess signals for a higher-level controller. The result is reduced space requirements in the control cabinet and simplified wiring, as well as modular machines in which each module contains its own control program and forwards simplified data to the central controller.

What protocols and IIoT interfaces do CODESYS-based TURCK devices support?

CODESYS-based TURCK devices combine multiple Ethernet protocols and IIoT interfaces in a single device. The BL67-PG-EN-V3 gateway operates as a PROFINET device, an EtherNet/IP device, or a Modbus TCP master/slave, and offers OPC UA server/client functions as well as an IIoT gateway function to the TURCK Cloud. The TBEN-L PLCs support PROFINET controllers/devices, EtherNet/IP scanners/devices, Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, and CANopen. Selected TX700 models also feature EtherCAT and SAE J1939 master functions. Protocol support varies by device; the product data sheet lists the exact scope.

What does TURCK offer beyond the standard CODESYS libraries?

TURCK provides its own libraries and function blocks for IO-Link and the BL ident® RFID system. In addition, TURCK releases device packages and firmware for every supported CODESYS version, such as v3.5.16.30 and v3.5.21.x for the BL67-PG-EN-V3 gateway. These building blocks allow IO-Link devices and RFID data to be used in the control program without having to rewrite the communication layer from scratch.

Can a CODESYS-based TURCK device replace a central PLC?

That depends on the application. TURCK devices with CODESYS can control an application autonomously without a higher-level controller or preprocess signals as a decentralized PLC in a network.

TURCK positions the TBEN-L PLCs for small or modular machines. For larger systems, suitability depends on the number of I/O points, the cycle time, and memory capacity; the TX700 series (1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8, 512 MB RAM) and the TX800 series (quad-core 1.6 GHz, 2 GB RAM) offer more computing resources than devices at the I/O level. In a published application example, the machine builder ISW used a programmable BL20 gateway as the PLC for its PALC image-processing machines. According to ISW, PLCs from well-known manufacturers could have handled this Task, but would have been unnecessarily expensive and complex.
