3D spatial sensing on autonomous forklifts

The MR15-Q80 3D radar sensor combines object detection and height monitoring for handling product carriers on AMR and AGV forklifts

Radar, AGV, IO-Link, Radar Sensors

Benefits

  • High availability, as radar sensors are less susceptible to interference than LiDAR sensors
  • Simplified commissioning through visualization in the TURCK Automation Suite (TAS)
  • Cost-effective, since 3D measurement can replace multiple alternative sensors
  • Large detection range of 15 meters with cone angles of ±60° horizontally and ±50° vertically

Challenge

Autonomous forklifts (AGVs) require reliable sensors for obstacle detection and height monitoring when handling product carriers. While LiDAR scanners are often used for environmental sensing, they are less suitable for vertical monitoring because their cone angle is limited. However, height monitoring on autonomous vehicles is essential to prevent damage to goods and equipment and to monitor the lifting range precisely. A solution is therefore needed that detects both the vertical and horizontal space while remaining robust and cost-effective.

Solution

TURCK’s MR15-Q80 3D radar scanner provides an ideal solution for height monitoring and object detection on autonomous forklifts. With a large detection range of up to 15 meters and cone angles of 120° horizontally and 100° vertically, the sensor detects not only obstacles, but also their precise vertical position. This enables precise control of lifting movements, minimizing the risk of collisions or damage to goods and vehicles. Unlike camera systems, which are often complex and time-consuming to commission, the MR15-Q80 features simple parameterization via IO-Link and visualization in the TURCK Automation Suite. The sensor enables configuration of up to six warning zones and three signal zones, which trigger a switching signal depending on the detected object. This flexibility, combined with robust radar technology, makes the MR15-Q80 a reliable and cost-effective alternative to LiDAR and camera systems.

"With the MR15-Q80, we offer reliable height monitoring and 3D spatial sensing that enable precise operations and significant cost savings."
